Moved to Michigan and got older

Home Sweet Home

Erika and I drove up to Michigan this weekend and started moving into our family’s house on White Lake near where I grew up.  I went to high school near here, and I’m pretty familiar with the rough winters.  On our drive up, we drove through freezing rain and snow – Erika’s first time behind the wheel in inclement weather, since we took both cars up.  I’d wanted to give her an ice-driving training session in a parking lot somewhere, but no time for that!

It’s birthday central around here:

  • November 9 – Joe Sullivan (the guy who taught me how to program)
  • November 10 – me, Don Duncan (my manager at Southern, another former Michigander)
  • November 11 – my much better half Erika, my sister Emily

These people all rock.

And now, if you’ll excuse me, it’s time to go catch up on the hundreds of emails I missed since I took off on Thursday for the moving voyage.  Inbox Zero is going to be especially tough today!

  • Nice place Brent, makes me miss home with all those leaves on the ground. Glad to hear Erika survived her first time driving in the frozen tundra of the north.

Incidentally, my birthday is the 23rd so we both share November birthdays as well.

  • I’m from NJ and the homes around here are also covered in leaves. It looks nice and peaceful; good luck with the move.

  • You will need to take the better half ice fishing.. A true northern adventure! BTW I think I remember going to a party here?

  • Ah, that was my other grandparents, Grandma & Grandpa Ozar. And I really did get disinherited for that party! How funny. It was totally worth it, heh….

  • This is such a coincidence for me. Whitehall is so close to where I grew up. Even now I still live in Michigan, but further away from Whitehall.

Not exactly a ton of DBA jobs in Whitehall. What made you move out of Michigan?

    • I do almost all of my work remotely, so I can pretty much live anywhere as long as there’s an airport within an hour’s drive. We ended up moving to Chicago after about a year because we missed restaurants and shopping. I do still love West Michigan, but downtown Chicago is a better fit for us at this point of our lives.

Thanks for stopping by! Where do you live?
