I do a lot of reading & research as part of my job, and I try to stay current on a ton of blogs and sites. Think of me as your personal filter for SQL Server news and blogs.

  • My bookmarks on DeliciousRSS Feed – Delicious is a browser plugin that automatically saves all of your bookmarks to their servers. You can spy on what I’m saving as favorites, basically. I tag stuff with terms like sqlserver, performancetuning, inspiration, funny, etc.
  • My shared items on Google ReaderRSS Feed – I subscribe to a ton of SQL Server blogs, and basically I’m weeding out the crap for you. When I share something, it’s *really* good.

Priya – unfortunately, I don’t know what courses your college offers, but I’d suggest checking into courses like database theory. Keep in mind, though, that as I’ve written in the posts above, the college degree alone doesn’t get it. You’ll likely need a job in IT first, so consider taking courses that will help get you in the door as a programmer or systems administrator. That knowledge is useful for DBAs too.

    Hi Brent,

I have been working as manual/automation analyst for past few years. I’ve some what experience with Sql in terms of verification/validation of data that I use for testing. Are there specific steps that I should take to break into becoming a DBA?
    Thank you,
    Mac
