[Video] Building a Brand By Sharing Your Work

You’ve got a good job, and some spare time. You’re thinking about giving back to the community by blogging, presenting, live streaming, or working on Github projects – and you’d like to make your next job search easier. Let’s talk about it.

I apologize for the ghosty nature of my video! I was in the midst of tweaking my home studio setup, and I made the mistake of changing lighting settings right before recording. Doh! I felt bad about that, but like I mention in the video, “Artists ship,” hahaha. I couldn’t put another 41 minutes of my life into that video to fix the ghosting, but hope the content is still worth it.

Thanks a lot Brent, this is very insightfull. I am from Brazil and started working with SQL server since the version 6.5 and nowadays I decided to share my experience writing articles to MSSQLTips and I am having fun doing that. These are the ones that it was published already https://www.mssqltips.com/author/sebastiao-pereira/ My very best regards!!

Thanks for sharing, Brent! I admire your ability to keep doing it tirelessly for years, shipping quality content.

This video is especially useful now, when some of the goals require building a “public” profile, or a brand. (eating popcorn on a couch may sound like a good option, but… 😀 )

I’ll take the opportunity to advertise a GitHub repository : https://github.com/aleksey-vitsko/Database-Administrator-Tools . Still require a lot of work, but some of stored procedures can be very useful for DBAs.

  • Thanks Brent, this is great information that will help so many. I respect all the work you’ve done and thanks for giving back to the community. I am fortunate that I am at the end of my DBA career. Today’s job climate is scary and I worry for those just getting started like my daughter. I can technically “retire” from this work at any time but I love my job and team. I am going to ride it out for a few more years until the company I work for is sold (should be within the next few years), at which point, I will become your helpful hardware man at Ace or a starter at a golf course. Adios!
