Creative Commons Licensing
When you want to lock down something so that you own it start to finish, you can copyright it. That gives you exclusive ownership of it and doesn’t let anybody else do much of anything with it.
If, on the other hand, you actually want people to do things with your work, you need a different kind of license. Creative Commons is like copyright, but it lets you assign specific rights to the public. We want to encourage people to distribute some of our work free of charge, so we chose Creative Commons licensing for our SQL Server in AWS book.

Our SQL Server in AWS book is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-No Derivative Works 3.0 United States License. That means:
- You’re free to copy, distribute, and transmit my work
- You must attribute my work in the manner specified by me (but not in any way that suggests that I endorse you or your use of my work)
- You may not use my work for commercial purposes without my express written permission
- You may not alter, transform, or build upon my work without my express written permission

How to Use Our Text in Your Site
If you’d like to include a short summary of one of our articles in your site, please include a link back to the original post on our site, prominently disclose the original author, and do not use more than 25% of the post.
If you’d like to include more material than that, contact us and we’d be glad to discuss it with you. We’ve granted exclusions to some other sites.
If you find our blog posts on any other site, please email us.
If you’d like to automatically copy all of our new posts, please read our posts on plagiarism first. I know you think you’re helping the community by getting the word out about our material, but we don’t want our content copied without permission ahead of time. Contact us first and we’ll be glad to discuss it, but if we find our content copied, we won’t grant permission after the fact under any circumstances.
