With minimal direction the Data Architect will strategically design and implement operational data stores (ODS), data warehouses, and data marts ensuring high levels of data availability and accuracy for analysts and staff across the organization. This individual is responsible for data standards and models for warehouse architectures as well as data quality standards. The Data Architect will evaluate and select all infrastructure components such as software, hardware, BI tools and database management systems. This work is related to ensuring the effective and efficient use of technology in support of City operations as well as decision makers. Responsibilities also involve efficient service delivery by establishing appropriate management and governance structures, technology plans and standards, operating practices and technology investment.
The role involves assessing and cultivating long-term strategic goals for data warehousing in conjunction with data users, analysts, department managers and other key stakeholders. They will use existing knowledge as well as conduct research to make recommendation on data products, services, protocols, and standards. The position is responsible for evaluating and recommending select data warehouse components including hardware, database management systems, ETL software, data mining tools, meta data management tools and business intelligence solutions.
The successful candidate will have technical experience with designing, building, installing, configuring and supporting multi-terabyte data stores and data warehouses. They will have significant experience with database platforms including Oracle, SQL Server and multi-dimensional data models. Strong understanding of denormalization of data as it applies to data warehousing is needed. Additionally, understanding of star schema and dimensional tables is required. Other abilities needed: strong understanding of relational database structures, theories, principles, and practices; hands-on experience with information engineering, data architecting, data mining, large-scale data modeling and business requirements gathering/analysis. Working knowledge of current systems software, protocols and standards including best coding practices, ETL best practices, cyber security, and advances in data warehousing tools are also key.
