[Video] Office Hours: Off St. Thomas
I’m at sea again, this time cruising aboard the Disney Treasure off of St. Thomas. Let’s go through your top-voted questions from https://pollgab.com/room/brento.
Office Hours: Database Q&A Off St. Thomas
- 00:00 Start
- 01:40 DbaMan: You have been reulctant to turn on ADR. It is required for optimized locing in SQL Server 2025. What is your view of ADR + Optimized locking? Is it almost an automatic yes, or should it only be enabled if we have BIG problems with locking/blocking?
- 05:32 TeaEarlGrayHot: Why is the size of the persistent version store in SQL with optimized locking a concern while in postgres and mysql that store their persistent version store in table, it is not? Is the assumption that postgres and mysql are less likely to use HA?
- 07:27 Will: We have a primary mssql enterprise cluster (2 vms) and a DR cluster (2 vms). We use one always on AG on the primary cluster, and another for the DR cluster. We connect the two AGs via a DAG. Is this a typical SQL DR setup, or is there a better way to set up a DR environment?
- 11:34 MyTeaGotCold: Have you seen anyone regret choosing Azure Hyperscale rather than another Azure PaaS? Microsoft seems to push it very hard.
- 12:25 Jeffry Altamar: What is your advice for removing a massive 4TB table from a live database: should I delete records in chunks and then drop it, or simply drop the table with no previous steps? What is safest?
- 13:47 Elwood Blues: How much AI should a prospective SQL 2025 DBA know if the database is using the new vector type?
- 15:33 Bandu: What’s your opinion of AI written books? Should they be flagged as AI witten? Would you ever purchase one?
