New Stuff in the Mastering Server Tuning Class
I just got done with another rotation of my Mastering classes, so if you’ve got a membership to those recordings, it’s time to head in and watch the changed modules. This is especially true if you’ve got an annual subscription, and you’re planning on canceling this November before your renewal hits – get in there now and watch the new stuff before your membership expires!
- Fixing RESOURCE_SEMAPHORE Waits – rewritten from scratch to explain how SQL Server’s memory clerks work, what the top clerks are worldwide, and the 6 ways to fix memory grants when they’ve gotten out of control.
- Using Query Store Safely – you’ll learn where it doesn’t really work, why you should still enable it anyway, how to configure it, how to monitor its health, how to do edge case troubleshooting, and how the engines and us meatbags can use it.
- Lab 1 – given a running workload, figure out whether the plan cache and Query Store are giving you accurate answers, or if you have a problem with unparameterized or improperly parameterized queries.
- Fixing LCK Waits with ADR and Optimized Locking – after (and only after) you’ve gotten RCSI working, and your workload is still experiencing blocking, SQL Server 2025’s Optimized Locking means it’s finally time to implement ADR. We talk about how it’s dangerous, and how to test & monitor it.
- Lab 2 – given a running workload, solve the blocking problems. You can use any of your tools from the MIT, MQT, or MST classes.
- How I Misuse Resource Governor – I explain the 3 valid uses for RG, why one of them simply doesn’t work, and show you how I misuse it in order to build chargeback and blame reports.
- Tuning SQL Server with AI – we use Claude Code and ChatGPT Codex to connect directly to the SQL Server, assess the performance issue, build a mitigation plan, and test the plan.
Log in and check out the updated Mastering Server Tuning class in your library. Enjoy!
