SQL Server 2008 Release Date: Today.

Microsoft SQL Server 2008 has been released, and the release date was Wednesday, August 6.  Awesome – less than three years since SQL 2005, thereby meeting their goals and keeping the whole Software Assurance benefits worth the money.

You can download it now if you’ve got an MSDN subscription – those are a great deal at around $300 per year.

SQL Server Performance has a good summary blog entry talking about what’s great with SQL 2008.

I’ve started rebuilding my machines & demos for my SQL 2008 presentations over the next couple of weeks.

  • Unfortunately I’m strapped to an ERP system that only very recently started supporting SQL 2005.

  • Just started reading your blog. Great info! Where did you find an MSDN subscription for $300? I have a TechNet plus subscription that costs around $300/year but the cheapest I have found for an MSDN professional subscription (the lowest priced that includes SQL Server) was almost $1200 with a ~$750/year renewal.

  • Dave – check out the Hot Deals forums at FatWallet.com. They post all kinds of awesome deals and coupons, and the MSDN subs come up pretty regularly. Watch out though – every time I visit that site, I end up buying more stuff I didn’t really need, hahaha!
