I love building software
I help developers, DBAs, and engineers build faster, robust, and scalable solutions; Microsoft SQL Server is frequently a part of that solution, but I’m familiar with more than the database. I’ve worked as a database and emerging technology expert at Quest Software researching new trends and technologies around data storage. Before that I worked across many industries as a system administrator, developer, and DBA. I’ve been involved in all aspects of application development and deployment.
Throughout my career I’ve focused on combining the best tools and technology to solve the task at hand, no matter what those tools and technologies are. Working with a variety of tools needs a special set of skills, not only do I learn quickly, but I love to share what I know with your team. I have a history of applying new tools to old problems, explaining the solution in a fun way, and getting everyone working together to solve the problem. I don’t keep secrets or hoard knowledge; whatever I know, your team can know.
My Specialties
I’m familiar with a lot of technologies, but I primarily focus on:
- Microsoft SQL Server
- Database architecture and design patterns
- Cloud computing and cloud databases
I’ve spoken at conferences including DevLink, Stir Trek, OSCON, and the PASS Community Summit. My sessions have consistently been highly rated and I pride myself on their quality. I have also been interviewed for radio and podcasts, most recently on the .NET Rocks! podcast and on KFAI community radio.
My Background
Before starting Brent Ozar PLF, I was an Emerging Technology Expert at Quest Software where I researched database trends and technologies.
Before working at Quest, I spent two years as the database administrator and architect at Cass Information Systems, a multi-billion dollar freight, telecom, and utility billing payment and expense management company in central Ohio. As the only DBA and primary database developer, I needed to make sure that the databases were always fast and available while performing complex analytics on a live database.

Contact Me
If you’re lucky, you might run into me somewhere around Portland, OR. I’ll probably be buying coffee, food from a truck, or attending a user group meeting.
If you’re running into problems with SQL Server performance or architecture, I can help. I offer a simple 3-day SQL Server health check-up where I work remotely with you to find your current bottlenecks, improve configurations, and tell you how to make things faster and more reliable.
If you’re considering a move to the cloud, a change in architecture, or you want to find ways to scale your SQL Server infrastructure, I can help with that to. I offer a 3-day database analysis where I work remotely with your team to outline your current environment, identify scaling pain points, and develop an action plan to meet your needs. Whether you’re looking for virtualization solutions, implementing a private cloud, or a brand new cloud architecture, I can help you understand the advantages of the cloud.
When you fill out this form, I’ll usually ask you few follow-up questions to make sure that we’re a good fit for each other and schedule a 30 minute call to figure out the next steps.
