The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) grants EU residents the right to ask for your data in a portable format, or ask to be forgotten. To exercise your rights, fill out this form, or email us at Help@BrentOzar.com.

A verification email is sent to you immediately. Make sure to check your spam or junk mail folders, and double-check the email address you put in. If you still haven’t received a confirmation email in 15 minutes, email your request to Help@BrentOzar.com just in case something went awry with the Internet. (Hey, it happens.)

What happens next for data portability requests

  1. We send an email to your email address
  2. You click a link in that email, verifying that you’re the rightful owner of that email address
  3. We human beings get your response, and send you a link to the data we host in WordPress (our blog & e-commerce platform) for BrentOzar.com and SQLServerUpdates.com – note that we’re humans, so there can be a time delay here, but this will likely be the first/quickest one you get
  4. If applicable, we request a data export from MailChimp (our email newsletter platform), and sends you that zip file separately via e-mail (again, note the humans in the process)
  5. If applicable, we send your uploaded diagnostic data from SQL ConstantCare®

If any of those steps take more than a day, or if you’ve got questions about where your request is at, please don’t hesitate to contact us again to follow up. (Sure, technically, we have one month to comply, but we want to move quickly on these.)

The single most common issue is someone mistyping their email address, and if we hit reply and get a bounceback email…we can’t contact you. Second most common? Spam or junk mail filters that put our emails into folders, and folks think we’re not replying when we’re just hollering into the void.

What data isn’t included in data portability requests

We don’t store your payment methods. Our payment processing is handled by StripePaypal, and Gumroad, so for your account details those companies, contact them. They are your data controller for your online payment accounts.

Any query execution plans you have uploaded to PasteThePlan are not included because that’s an anonymous service: we don’t track who uploaded which plans.

For additional details, read our Privacy Policy.

What happens next for erasure requests

  1. We send an email to your email address
  2. You click a link in that email, verifying that you’re the rightful owner of that email address
  3. We human beings get your response, make sure that any existing orders are canceled, and then trigger the anonymization process in WordPress (our blog & e-commerce platform) for BrentOzar.com and SQLServerUpdates.com – note that we’re humans, so there can be a time delay here
  4. If applicable, we delete you from MailChimp (our email newsletter platform) – again, note the humans in the process, but if you want this to happen instantly, just click the Unsubscribe link in any email that you get from us
  5. If applicable, we erase your data from SQL ConstantCare®
  6. During the course of the above, you may receive a series of emails from each platform (WordPress, MailChimp, Gumroad, etc.) confirming that your data has been deleted
  7. We will send one final email manually confirming that your erasure is complete
“Right to be forgotten? I call that Friday night.”

What data isn’t erased

In order to stay compliant with financial regulations, we maintain paid customer order data for a period of time.

By default, any blog post comments you’ve left are not erased. This is currently a gray area in the law, and it’s going to be different from customer to customer. However, we’d be happy to erase your comments as well. If you want your comments to be erased as well, request your data first, and then let us know which comments you would like erased.

Any query execution plans you have uploaded to PasteThePlan are not erased because that’s an anonymous service: we don’t track who uploaded which plans. If you need a plan to be erased, contact us with the plan’s URL.

We don’t store your payment methods. Our payment processing is handled by StripePaypal, and Gumroad, so for your account details those companies, contact them. They are your data controller for your online payment accounts.

Our company has an online presence in a lot of places – Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, etc – and if you left comments on those other sites, you’ll need to contact them to arrange for deletion. They are your data controller for your online presence on those sites.
