I travel to SQL Server user groups and give seminars on SQL Server training, database administration, performance tuning and more. They’re usually arranged in a class-style setup: I talk through demos and slides for about an hour, and then you can ask questions. Sometimes these are taped for video release later.
Sept 30-Oct 2 – SQLBits
York, UK
Virtualization and SAN Basics for DBAs – pre-conference session on Thursday – These two technologies can make a very big – and very bad – difference in how your SQL Server performs. Wouldn’t it be great if you could get the real, honest lowdown from a virtualization administrator, a SAN administrator, and a DBA? Wouldn’t it be even better if one person had done all three, and could give you the pros and cons of each point of view? That person is Brent Ozar, a Microsoft Certified Master who’s been there and done that.
Virtualization and SAN Basics for DBAs – shorter session (but still deep dive!) on Friday – a subset of the above session. Instead of going all day on this, we’ll just cover the basics in one session.
Oct 14 – New England SQL Server User Group – Virtualizing SQL Server
Waltham, MA (Boston)
Virtualization isn’t here to make things faster – it’s here to make things cheaper. The better you know about the compromises it makes, the better you can configure your SQL Servers. Brent Ozar, a Microsoft Certified Master, knows this firsthand because he’s been both a VMware administrator and a SQL Server DBA. He’ll explain how virtualization changes CPU, memory, networking, storage, and high availability. You’ll learn what questions to ask your virtualization sysadmins and how to know if you’re leaving performance on the datacenter floor.
November 8-11 – PASS Summit
Seattle WA
I’m doing my first Spotlight sessions this year – sessions that are longer and have more room in the audience. I’m really psyched about the topics:
You’re Not Attractive, But Your Presentations Can Be – Come hear Buck Woody (Microsoft’s Real World DBA) and Brent Ozar (SQL Server Certified Master) explain how they make high scores at presentations. It’s not luck, charm or (surprisingly) good looks – there are tips and tricks you can use to make your own presentations rock. With Buck and Brent in the same room it’s much like Forest’s Box of Chocolates, but you’re sure to learn more about presentation techniques that you can extract into your own style.

Want Me to Speak At Your Event?
I’d love to give a presentation at your next user group meeting or conference. With today’s economy, travel costs can be tough to justify, though, so we’ve started doing remote presentations via Microsoft LiveMeeting. If you’ve got a projector and a good set of computer speakers, I can present remotely anytime. I use a webcam, too, so your attendees can see me making faces when they ask tough questions.
Check out my list of presentation topics, and contact me to let me know what dates you’d like me to present. I’d be honored!
