As part of my long vacation over the last week and a half, Erika and I went to the NOAA Sea Turtles lab in Galveston, Texas. This place raises hundreds of loggerhead sea turtles to give them a better chance to survive in the wild. The tour explains how the sea turtles live, what they eat, and more.
Anytime you go, you’ll see hundreds of turtles in various life stages from birth to three years old. The three year old ones can weigh around sixty pounds, and since they live to be 80-100 years old, they get a lot heavier than that.
We loved it, and it was worth every minute. I’d highly recommend this free tour to anybody living anywhere near Galveston.
I took the digital camera along and took a few photos and movies of sea turtles.

Looks like the boys are girls. Erika and I always wondered if our turtles were male or female, and thanks to one of my readers, now I know for sure. They’re chicks! You can get a good idea of the differences at Therese’s site. The picture at right shows her turtles, Blue and Turquoise. The female, Blue, is the at the top right with the short claws. Frank & Fred don’t have long nails or tails like Turquoise, at the bottom of the picture. Now we have to rename the boys…uh, I mean girls.
I’ve been looking at other blog software again, like Movable Type, and I’ve been utterly disappointed. Most of ‘em don’t support images as easily as mine does, so I’m thinking I’ll stick with mine for now. I keep looking for MovableType’s linkback support but with an Microsoft SQL Server back end, and I’m not finding it. Ran across a Blog.NET project on GotDotNet, but it’s a private project, and I haven’t been approved for membership yet. Odd.

Our new little turtle is the most adorable thing in the world. I forgot how cute these little guys can be. My two big turtles are beautiful, but this little guy is just cute. No other word for it. He’s maybe the size of a quarter, and he’s just staring up at me while I’m typing this. He floats perfectly in the water, just looking around, checking out the sights.
I have to pick him up a filter this morning from Petsmart. Can’t wait til the place opens. Then, we have to figure out where to put his aquarium. We’re moving to our new apartment at the end of this week, and I figured I’d leave him in place for now, except I can’t see my big boys because he’s in the way. I’ll probably move him to the other side of my desk for now, and get a real aquarium stand for the big boys and put them in the living room or something.

I’m proud to announce the newest member of our family. He’s an inch and a half long, he weighs two ounces, and he’s a natural born swimmer. We haven’t named him yet, though.
Erika got us another baby turtle, which brings our aquatic family up to three. He’s a wee fella, and I can’t wait to get home and play with him. What a great way to ring in the new year!
In sadder news, Bailey (Mom’s Great Dane) is being put to sleep tomorrow. He finally lost his battle with cancer. He led a long, full life, and we all loved him dearly. I’m glad I got the chance to go up there recently and spend time with him, because he’s a big sweetheart. I’ll miss him.
