The birds have been getting more gutsy the last few days, and today I caught a cardinal on camera chowing down at my office birdfeeder.
I’m determined to get a bigger in-window birdfeeder – watching these little fellas is so much fun.

I’m back in Houston, and summer’s coming quickly. It got up to 80F today, and my home office on the third floor was too hot to tolerate. Our home air conditioning works great, but it only balances the air out between the floors when the fan is running. It’s pretty efficient, though, and since it doesn’t have to run all the time, the third floor gets hot quite a few times a day.
I ran down to Lowe’s and picked up a basic $35 ceiling fan. An hour and a lot of swear words later, the breeze is blowing through my hair, and the office is tolerable again. I don’t have a thermometer in here, but it’s about 70 downstairs, so it’s probably 74-75 up here. No problemo, especially since I’m in shorts.
My installation of Jay Allen’s MT-Blacklist is doing a great job of preventing blog comment spam. MT-blacklist makes an entry in my Movable Type activity log whenever it blocks a spam comment, and as of today, it’s catching about 90% of the spam attempts. Hooah. Gotta send that man some Paypal.
Well, the birds finally found the window birdfeeder up next to my office. Several times a day, a couple of birds will make their way up here, plop down in the birdfeeder, and chow while I work. It’s very relaxing.
I shot this picture right before we left for Paris for vacation, and promptly forgot about it until I unloaded the vacation pictures this afternoon. Not a great picture, but you can click on it to see the full version, which is even less exciting, hahaha. I tried several times to get pictures of the little fellas feeding, but every time I picked up the camera and aimed it at them, they scattered.
This evening, I saw the first pigeon on the porch. One solitary fat fella was parked on the top of the fence, keeping an eye on the army of a dozen or so small birds. He looked out of place, like an older kid that’s been held back in school. I like him already.
Well, it took a while, but birds finally figured out we’ve got a birdfeeder in the backyard. A bright day after several days of rain brought the birds out for feeding, and there you have it.
I bought MyThera.com from James Beatty this week, and I’m hoping to have some new content up soon. I’m loving my new Thera, and it makes a great cost-efficient PocketPC phone for geeks. It’s a first generation combination PocketPC and Phone, and while it doesn’t do a completely stellar job at either of them, it’s a good compromise. The value really stands out now that you can find them under $200 on Ebay.
Going to a Rockets game tonight with a couple of lawyers in my fantasy basketball league. I don’t aspire to a nicer car, bigger house, or whatever, but I do wish I could buy bigger season packages with nicer Rockets seats. That’s probably one of the milestones I’ll look back at in a couple of years: how will my Rockets seats have improved, hahaha…

My New Nailmaster
I’m a Republican, probably even your stereotypical Republican, right down to my NodeDB license plate that says “I vote, shoot, and wardrive.” (Well, okay, maybe the wardriving part isn’t so stereotypical.) But I’ve never actually owned a gun. I fired a few back in high school, and I’ve wanted one for home defense, but not enough to actually shell out the clams.
I finally broke down and bought one this weekend. Not so much for home defense, though, as it is to just finish off a few problems around the house. Erika’s been bugging me to get some household projects done, and I got tired of her bothering me about it, so I let temptation get the best of me.
I live in Houston, so guns are easy to get. There’s two stores near my house, with plenty of models to choose from. I didn’t want to get a cheap one, because I’m concerned about the safety on those – I mean, who wants one of these just going off accidentally? No, I stepped up a little and bought a slightly more expensive model, something more durable because I think I’ll be using it a lot. Besides, those cheap ones looked a little femmy, like the kinds of guns girls would use. While mine isn’t manly by any means, it’s a nice gunmetal blue.
It’s electric powered, which surprised me. I’d never seen an electric one before, but that’s cool, because this one will fire twice a second if you need to really shoot some metal around.
I think I’ll go use it in the living room for starters. Some people might practice outside first, but not me. I’m the fearless type.
Yesterday, Erika went through the house with the camera, taking pictures of the place for a friend of hers. She put a lot of effort into organizing them into a gallery, making notes on each of the pictures. I thought I had taken a lot of house pictures, but wow – I think just in that one day, she’s used the digital camera more than I have since I bought it!
I know, I know, I talk about the squirrels a lot, but to me, this really is why I got a house. I walked downstairs this morning to find Mr. Squirrel staring back at me through the back door. I’d caught him getting ready for breakfast.
I’ll forever call all squirrels Mr. Squirrel – Dad & Caryl got me started on that. The family dog, Lizzie (Borden), knows what Mr. Squirrel means. Whenever you say, “Hey, Lizzie, Mr. Squirrel’s outside. Do you see him?” or anything like that, she makes a beeline for the nearest window.
Everybody says to design a room around a particular object: pull your room colors from a painting or piece of art that you particularly enjoy. I went surfing through Ebay the other day looking for the starter piece for my home office, and found it in a Lichtenstein-designed tour poster for U2′s Pop tour. I’m a fan of Roy Lichtenstein’s bright colors and strong shapes. I know, I know, it’s low-brow cartoon-style art, but I like it.
That piece, while not even framed on the wall yet, triggered a second purchase, a bright yellow metal trash can from Ikea. Next will be the room color (no clue on that yet, probably something Disney-ish) and a 50′s modern desk. I’d love to find a piece of salvage metal that I could use as a desk top, something big and swoopy. I’m a big fan of The Emporium, a Houston architectural salvage shop, but I think I’m reaching too close to contemporary on this particular piece.
Today surprised me with all kinds of new friends and enemies. This morning, while I was showering, Erika snapped a few photos of the first squirrel to eat at our birdfeeders. I was thrilled because I love squirrels, and we promptly moved one of the feeders to a more visible place. I went the extra mile and drove to Lowes tonight to get another two feeders, including one that mounts outside a window using suction cups.
I filled up the window-mounted one with the birdseed we’d stored in the garage (in its original plastic bag) and carried it inside to hang it up in my third-floor office, where I can’t see the other bird feeders. I didn’t make it ten feet into the house before I started wondering what that sharp burning sensation was on the back of my hand. When I looked down, I saw my first fire ants. On my hand, no less. Not very gracious, considering they’d taken up residence in my garage and eaten my food.
The bird food went into the garbage, and I learned a lesson: no bird food in the garage unless it’s in a sealed container. Very well sealed. In a vault.
Home ownership is full of funny lessons like that. I’d rather not learn the rest the hard way. I didn’t do my research before I got the birdfeeders, and now methinks I’d better hit the books this weekend. Or at least the web sites.
Of all the research I did on this house and the neighborhood, of all the checking I did during the build process, I never thought to make sure this house could get DSL. And of course, turns out that it can’t. (For the non-geeks out there, you have to be within a certain distance of the phone company in order to get DSL.) Being inside the loop and so close to downtown, I never would have thought I’d be unable to get DSL. Just didn’t occur to me.
And worse, Time Warner isn’t servicing this area with cable yet either, since it’s a brand new subdivision, and it’ll be at least a month before I can get Road Runner (internet over TV cable).
So I’m stuck here at the house with nothing but dialup, and no good alternative for the next 30-45 days. That doesn’t work for me as a telecommuter, so I’ll be spending a lot of time at Kaveh Kanes, my favorite internet cafe downtown.
That also means I can’t host my web site at home anymore, so I’m in the process of ordering a web host account at a hosting company. I don’t want to pay for a bunch of accounts, so my class reunion sites and side businesses will be offline for a while. Once I get Road Runner, I’ll bring those back online.
Woe is me.
