Inside the Microsoft Certified Master Program

The SQL Server Standard is an online magazine from the Professional Association for SQL Server.  In their latest issue, they published my article about what it’s like to apply for the MCM program, prepare for it, and live through it.

When you click on this link, you’re going to have to be logged into the PASS site.  It’s a free registration.  Once you’re logged in, you’re going to have to come back here and click the link again because PASS doesn’t save the page you were trying to access when you registered.  Yes, this sucks, and yes, I’ve told them it sucks, but it’s tough being a volunteer organization with limited resources.

Want to add something cool to your resume? Consider writing for the Standard.  It’s a good thing to have on your accomplishments list when you’re looking for a raise, a new position, or a new client.  Email Grant Fritchey and let him know what you’re interested in writing about, and if you’re stumped, check out my post on how to choose blog & presentation topics.

Any chance you will repost this article on your blog? I have probably 5 different registrations with PASS, but I keep forgeting my password and userID used. Some time ago I decided not to read anything that is protected by password, but this is one article is something that I would like to read in the future.

No, but if you’re working with SQL Server, I’d highly recommend signing up. They offer a ton of free training, and it’s a volunteer organization.

No disrespect, but your blog series on the MCM program is more comprehensive than the article and a better resource imo.

Christian – hahaha, thanks, sir. The article’s a subset of my blog post entries – the magazine is only so long, but here on the blog, I can blather on for days. ;-)

    Hey Brent,

I have a suggestion. How about allowing readers leave feedback for every article separately, not one place for feedback for all the issues?

Alex – thanks for the feedback, but my blog isn’t a part of PASS. Can you leave this feedback on their site instead? Thanks!

Can you pass along to your PASS people that I would pay for a Printed SQL Based Periodical? I can’t be alone here.

Zeph – interesting. Did you leave that as a comment on the PASS page? That’s probably the most effective way to reach ‘em.

SQL Server Standard was a printed periodical that was discontinued since it was no longer affordable. Printed magazines cost a lot these days and with so many blogs around not a lot of people would pay.

Brent, great article. I’ve finally resolved to do the MCM Exchange 2010, so started looking at the logistics (I live in London, UK) and your article is probably the only source of information outside of the training itself. Of course, everything about the program and lab was very useful.

    Thank you.

Bojan – great, glad I could help! Like you, I didn’t really know what to expect going in. Good luck!

    Hi,

Here’s a quick look into what it’s like to attend the MCM – from my perspective 20 months ago. If you are ready, I say, “Go for it!”
