i bought a mini gorilla as well and am now facing similar problems to what you have. I expected to be able to charge it while charging my netbook - but unfortunatly for me i was unable to do this.

Saying that i picked it up dirt cheap at $100 aussie so as an external battery to add battery life to my devices especially laptop while at uni where i can't get access to a power point it is especially useful. But there are some definate downsides and i think you have covered them quite well.

I considered a similar product on www.woot.com yesterday. It was made by energizer:

http://www.amazon.com/Energizer-XP18000-Rechargeable-Power-Laptops/dp/B002K8M9HC/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1263222938&sr=8-1

However, the reviews were disappointing so I decided against it. Is there a top notch product in this category?
