I came across a Kevin Kline article (96463) in sqlmag this month. It's a link to the automated db scripts from Microsoft's site. I haven't tried the scripts myself (I wrote my own automated scripts) but it sounds promising:

http://download.microsoft.com/download/4/0/C/40CBAD9A-D990-450B-8785-F288CEBFB448/AITSCRIPTS.ZIP

fwiw, I'm on version 4.0 of SQLSafe and yes they have some nitpicky bugs (not cluster aware, no silent install option a la SQL2005, mgt console bugs), but their backups under 4.0 have been running smooth thus far. I'm not sticking up for them b/c I've been through some pain as well, but as a barebones backup utility they run fairly fast compared to the competition (I had a bake-off as well and chose SQLSafe over the others). Thanks for the info on version 4.5. Since I don't plan to use their policy mgt functionality or OLR I may take it for a whirl.
