T-Mobile Hotspot Sign-In Hates Macs

Lincoln Road MallThe one downside of using a Mac is the spotty support from vendors.  Take T-Mobile’s WiFi service at Starbucks, for example: today, the service itself works fine, but the signup page doesn’t work on a Mac on either Firefox or Safari.  After putting in your username & password, the web server sends an empty jsp file.

I had a hunch that it would work under Windows, so I booted up my Windows installation under Parallels and logged in.  Worked great, and now T-Mobile recognizes my entire laptop – not just the Windows virtual machine – so I’m happily surfing along under OSX.

If I was an ambitious fella, I would complain to T-Mobile, but I know from previous hotspot support experiences that they have horrible support.

Ernie driving down Ocean Drive

I shot a little 45-second movie of Ernie riding along on my lap down Ocean Drive on South Beach just for chuckles. She loves riding along like this. I have no idea why you want to watch it, but you know, people get all famous and stuff on YouTube. Next thing you know, Ernie might be a millionaire with a TV show and an agent, and when I go to talk to her, she would give me the paw. Well, she does that now, come to think of it.

BarCamp Miami coming in February

BarCamp Miami

BarCamp is coming to Miami in February! BarCamp is a relaxed gathering of geek evangelists: there are no spectators, only participants. These are people who are passionate about what they do, and about sharing it with the rest of the community.

It’s going to be at the University of Miami, sponsored by their School of Communications, during the week of February 12th. The exact date isn’t nailed down yet, but you can help be a part of the event creation. Email alex [at] webpl [dot] us to get involved.

A few links:

As a guy with a geeky blog, I will of course be there, and that means I gotta figure out what I would present. Off the top of my head, I could do:

  • Time management with GTD, Remember The Milk
  • Database Administration 101 (how to manage a SQL Server in one hour per week)
  • Switching from Windows to Mac

I’m open to ideas, though. I’ll bounce it off my coworkers and see what comes up.

Update: the date is now set as Saturday, February 21.

The Boutique Generation

Tara Hunt blogged about the Boutique Generation, saying:

“You may be a member of the Boutique Generation if you:

  1. Enjoy shopping at your local pharmacy, grocer, clothing store where
you know the owners and feel yourself going out of your way to give
them business even if their prices are higher because you prefer to
have the personalized service over cost reduction
  2. Enjoy shopping at specialty stores, like Cheese Emporiums,
Perfumeries, Tea Shops, Sephora (drooool), etc. that carry a single,
    narrow type of product…”

The list goes on, and as I read through it, everything really rang true. It rang so close to home that I had to stop myself and ask, “I thought everybody felt this way?” I guess not, though, because when I drive past Wal-Mart parking lots, they’re almost always packed. That place is a zoo, and I can’t stand to step foot in there because it’s so utterly impersonal, so bland, so assembly-line. It’s not that I’m financially loaded and I can afford to shop at Saks – I can’t – but at least I can choose Target, where they offer more products with the types of personal stories that Tara’s article touches on.

Tara’s article is a real thought-provoker. The only thing I would suggest is that the word “generation” probably doesn’t apply. For example, my mom exhibits these exact same personality traits, and by definition, she’s a member of a different generation. (Don’t take offense to that, Mom.)

Ben and I finishing the Run for Miracles

Ben and I finishing the Run for Miracles

I ran a 5k this morning in Delray Beach with Ben, the guy from work who got me started on the whole running thing.

At our post-race breakfast at Cracker Barrel (helllooo, calories), I said that I don’t enjoy running at all, but I’m doing it for the long run. When I’m 50, and I’m not having a heart attack, I’m going to thank myself. Fingers crossed.
